CITES loopt uit op grote teleurstelling
De CITES-conferentie over de handel in bedreigde planten en dieren is gisteren 25 maart geëindigd in een grote teleurstelling voor het Wereld Natuur Fonds (WNF) en alle landen die serieus werk willen maken van de bescherming van dier- en plantensoorten. Alle belangrijke voorstellen om vissen en koraal te beschermen tegen overmatige handel haalden het niet.

Marine species get raw deal at CITES
A United Nations meeting on endangered species trade adjourned today after two weeks of negotiations marked by the repeated rejection of proposals to better protect marine species, such as the Atlantic bluefin tuna, corals and several shark species.

Tegenslag voor behoud haaien
Het Wereld Natuur Fonds (WNF) noemt het een grote tegenslag voor het behoud van de haai dat het niet is gelukt om vijf haaiensoorten beter te beschermen. Tijdens de CITES-conferentie in Qatar werden voorstellen om drie soorten hamerhaaien, de witpuntrifhaai en de doornhaai verworpen. Alleen het voorstel om de haringhaai op Lijst II van CITES te plaatsen kon rekenen op een 2/3 meerderheid van de stemmen. Dat betekent dat de handel in deze soort alleen nog onder strenge voorwaarden mogelijk is.

Handel in haaien hoog op agenda CITES
Regeringen van 175 landen komen van 13-25 maart in Doha (Qatar) bijeen voor de 3-jaarlijkse CITES-conferentie. CITES* is het verdrag dat de internationale handel in bedreigde wilde dieren en planten reguleert, om zo te voorkomen dat ze uitsterven. Opvallend is dat niet eerder zo veel aandacht was voor zeedieren die door commerciële handel worden bedreigd. Zo staat er op de agenda een voorstel om de handel in blauwvintonijn te verbieden. Verder worden voorstellen besproken om de handel in vier haaiensoorten en bloedkoraal aan banden te leggen.
